Back in 2012 the technological world was ripe for the picking. There were so many innovations that could have come from the hybrid WAN and the cloud. After discussions with some top-notch innovators, we came upon one conclusions. Not all WANs are the same.

Each WAN requires it’s own time and apace. Each one has specific requirements that the user needs to follow. It’s not as though as can put it out there and tell the audience “have at it.” Each WAN brand has it’s own instructions.

Recently, we sat down with a few experts in the field of technological advancements with WAN and cloud advancements. We wanted to hear their thoughts on what has become of these innovations. What started out as a good idea with advancement in some areas, has now been held back. It led us to question whether WAN still held the top place in cloud security and overall technological advancement.

Below you will find some of the answers we have been looking for. Keep in mind that these replies have been categorized. It makes it easier for those of you who are not tech heads to understand.


The primary focus of the WAN is for ease of deployment. These capabilities make it easier for the user to get done what he or she needs to get done. If you add in all the other technical aspects, this is when you need someone at the dashboard lighting the way.

The WAN provides this already, for the most part. We don’t need any extra technical issues to get in the way. It makes it harder for the WAN to do it’s job. It also makes it more difficult for the user to get done what he or she needs to get done.


The WAN is a top of the line top-3 IT budget line item. What does this mean? It means that spending is going to be at a minimum here. Users have two choices. They can either control the WAN themselves. They can also work with a hassle-free management aspect of production. Which one do you think most will choose?

Most people are going to side with the hassle-free market. They will default with MPLS and choose outsourcing. When it comes to WAN innovations, most of the time they become an incremental innovation. In other words, most people make it more complicated than it has to be. Tech heads tend do this, even if the issue is something simple and clean.

When it comes to the aspect of advancing the WAN, most people don’t want to do this. Some have a hard enough time trying to understand the basic workings of the WAN. When it comes to innovations and the cost tied to it, many simple shake their heads.

This is where things get tricky. Larger companies need this type of intelligence. Larger companies need the bigger infrastructures. They require bigger measures for scaling and dealing with encrypted messages.

Larger companies have more money to put out on this type of technology and implementation. So it stands to reason that companies of this size would want to take more time with WAN innovations.


There is no doubt that WAN innovations and implementing advancement can really do some good. The only issue lies in who has the money and infrastructure to back it up. As you can see from the above thoughts, only the larger companies have both of these things to move forward.

The other thing that gets called into question is the idea of “reinventing the wheel.” This would require adjustments on both ends. This would require going back to the drawing board in some respects. It would mean making sure that everyone has the ability to tap into WAN innovations, just so their company and infrastructure can take part.

This tends to be a costly experiment, even more so than the WAN innovations themselves. What road will be taken when it comes to “reinventing the wheel?” As of right now, things are unknown. Only time will tell. This also involves people taking a chance on something they have always been unsure about.
