What is better? Computer Science or Civil Engineering?

Ali K asked:

I am in B.Eng Electrical Engineering in Canada and after poor academic performance in electrical circuits courses and not being able to clear all of my electrical related courses, I have decided to switch either in Computer Science or in Civil Engineering.

Obviously I want to go into something which is easier (in terms of complexity and difficulty) but at the same time would provide me with good work opportunites in Canada or in Pakistan.

I myself don’t mind doing either of the degree programs, just want to know what the rest think. Please note that my priority is to switch into a program much easier than Electrical Engineering.

It all depends on your interest… If you like sweating it out in the heat and instructing workers to construct a building then Civil engg is the best… If you are a person who likes to crack his brain in front of the computer, then Comp science is your world. But the openings are more in comp science, but a civil engg from a good top rated college can give u a good position in a top construction company….
By the ay Im a software engineer and a engg in Electronics and communication

Civil is very math oriented, with cad cam computer related courses.Unless you already have a good job lined up I’d go with computer science or mechanical engineering, as civil and mechanical have many related courses. The average starting pay for civil is only 30k.Unless you get in with the city or region. The private sector doesn’t pay well for newbies.

I know your problem, everyone has these kinds of dilemma in their lives….

Right then…. I’m not going to tell you what is easier, but help you to understand it yourself…

    Let’s say….

    If you like…..
Drawing, Painting, considering things in a 3-D way and are good at recognising spatial desings, you should surely take civil engineering…

    But if you like…
Logical problems, puzzles, reasoning problems, know computers in general and is not that bad in mathematics then you should take computer engineering

The fact is that in civil you need to draw a lot, even thogh they are not artistic you should draw 3-D images. If you were that kid, who found it hard to draw a cube in junior classes, drop civil. In contrast with computers, you need to learn a new programming language with which you need to solve problems, so you need a logical mind…

Lastly, for an artist it might be simple to draw a diagram but for a lawyer, who has no artistic skills, may view it as a huge task..

Even now, if nothing clicks, go for a career guidance course, they would properly guide you by asking you a few questions, which will reveal your identity…

    Hope you got your answer…..

Both are very difficult — very math and physics intensive. Both are way more difficult/in depth than Electrical Engineering. So, be careful.
I would say go with what other people have said, just pick whatever you like best.

If you get stuck and need help with counseling, let me know, message me, I might have something for you.
