Electrical Engineering/Finance double major?
ArmedSquirrel asked:
I know that this sounds like a conflict of interest, but I am really interested in both fields. I mapped out both degree requirements, and I found out that I can graduate in 4 1/2 years.
I would like to minor in Finance, but Penn State doesn’t allow that. They have some joke of a minor called Business and the Liberal Arts, but there’s not much finance in that.
If I did do this double major, I’d have on average 18 credits a semester with 3 courses for engineering and 3 courses for finance. I know that engineering is a lot of work. However, with 3 engineering courses a semester, would this be a reasonable workload?
Simple Guy: I only have a handful of electives as well, but I had AP scores from high school to help me. Penn State’s EE is Top 20 in the country, so it’s no push over. Thank you for your input and good luck with your 4th year!

I’m a 4th year electrical engineer, but I’ve never heard of a double degree of engineering and finance. I’m also at a different university so it’s hard to relate (mine is super tough, less than a handful of electives allowed). For the first 3 years, we roughly had 4-5 engineering courses a term. It was tough, and painful, marks suffered because I wasn’t able to put in enough time for each course. I balanced my load this year though so that I only have 3 engineering courses a term for my final year+2 other courses (either easy engineering course, or arts elective). It’s much much easier, marks went up on average 15% so far. So I would say with 3 engineering courses a term it’s doable.
Even if you could, it would be a waste of your time. No career utilizes both fields. Pick one or the other.
