Question about the Electrical Engineering field?

superman asked:

This is my 2nd year of college, 1st year I just did general ed, now I’m taking calculus for the summer and plan to complete my prerequisites for electrical engineering next year, but besides that, what else can a student like me do to get ahead in the field? maybe possibly find a job? (I’m thinking about taking an electronic technician course in the summer, which would license me to work as an electronic technician) But I’m not sure if this job is even related to electrical engineering?

I earned my EE degree from the University of Alabama. It seems as if you are on the correct course as far as your classes. As far as work, I entered the co-op program. This is where you alternate working and going to school. For example in the Fall you would attend school and in the Spring you would work and the attend school again in the summer. The key is the work for 3-4 semesters to get actual work experience in the engineering field. You work for the same company the entire time and most company make their student a job offer upon graduation. Ask you guidance counselor about it, there are dates for registration and interviewing with perspective company’s. Good luck! You picked a great field.

Another possibility is finding yourself an internship. Sometimes these are not paid but they get you excellent experience in the field. Your department’s website should have information about possible internships/ job openings. If in doubt, just send an email to one of the electrical engineering advisers and ask them about job opportunities for undergrads.

I earned my EE from Iowa State University and as I was studing there, I met my husband who is a licensed electrician. I can tell you that I learned a lot from him when it came to the basics and how things added up. Electical circuitry in a house or business can give you an edge on the power side of EE too. You can also see if your college has a department that you can work at like I did that works with all the audio/visual things that classes use. We also have what is called ICNs (Iowa Communication Network) where people took classes in different towns and the signal was sent to one central location via satelite. Working there was very educational. Just keep your eyes open for things that spark your interest and you might find your EE calling from there! Good luck!
